Introduction

The primary job of a nurse is to provide home care to the elderly patients in a nursing home. At the basis level, nursing home nurses ensure to maintains acceptable personal hygiene of the patients, look after if they get proper nutrition; check on them to have a neat and clean bed. However, the advanced level responsibilities include monitoring of the patients such as administering medications vital signs, drawing bloods and providing IVs. Nursing Aides and Assistants

Nursing aides and assistants are the lower management staff members in a nursing home. They work under the supervision of the licensed practical nurses. They take care of the basic level of care of the patients that includes bathing, brushing the teeth, changing the clothes, combing hair etc. Apart from that they also perform toiletry duties such as providing assistance to the patients while going to the bathroom, emptying catheters’, changing bedpans etc. Some of the common duties include dietary care, collection of samples and assistance in case of transporting patents, maintaining the patient’s record, bedsore prevention etc.

Licensed Practical Nurses

Licensed practical nurses work under the direct supervision of the registered nurses where they are engaged in performance of the same tasks as that of the nursing assistants. Additionally, they also perform some advanced responsibilities such as monitoring blood pressure, temperature, respiration, heart rates, oxygen levels etc, of the patients. Apart from these, they are look after treating bedsores, inserting catheters giving injections, inserting catheters and administering medications. Some experienced licensed practical nurses are also responsible for the development of care plan for the patients.

Registered Nurses

Registered nurses are the highest nursing position in the nursing home. They are engaged in supervising and managing the activities of the nursing staff.  Apart from focusing on the immediate needs of the patients, registered nurses are responsible to keep track of the overall progress of the patient considering his or her medical history not only physically but also mentally.

Considering the overall medical history of the patient, the registered nurse make sure that each patient receive best care as much as possible. Additionally, basic duties and advanced care are being performed by the nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses respectively. They are also engaged in activities such as administering oxygen’s, intravenous infusions, monitoring of blood sugar levels, consultation with the surgeons and physicians etc.

Nursing Home Administrator

Some Registered nurses may get hired as administrator position in nursing homes. Administrator positions basically refer to acting as a Chief Executive Officer who is responsible to manage the entire nursing home. For this position, a registered nurse requires both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree with license and at least 5 years of experience in a nursing home. The duties of a registered nurse in such case are as follows;

  • Managing staff
  • Handling budgets
  • Ensuring that the patients are receiving quality care as prescribed by law
