What is Nursing?
Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.
Nurses practice in many specialties with differing levels of prescription authority. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has shaped the public image of nurses as care providers.

Career opportunities after completion of Nursing Course
A classic role is that of bedside nurse. Bedside nurses provide direct clinical services for people in hospitals and other facilities.
Nurses who work in long-term care often have higher levels of responsibility which include some supervisory duties. Nurses perform more difficult technical duties such as providing wound care or managing catheters or tube feedings. Some nursing homes even serve residents who are ventilator dependent.
They function as part of the discharge management team; one duty may be to contact patients soon after they leave the hospital to make sure that they have what they need to manage their health out in the community.
Nurses may work in varied community settings. School nursing is a common area of specialization. School nurses do far more than apply bandages. They monitor and manage care for children with various health conditions, some of which can be life threatening.
Many nurses take their education to the graduate level. Some work as supervisors or case managers or care coordinators for patients with very complex needs. Some take on roles that don’t exist at the lower levels.
Careers In India
Demand for Nurses in India
With the rapid growth in the population coupled with the requirement for better healthcare facilities, there is an endless demand for nurses in the country. However, the supply of nurses really falls short of meeting this ever growing demand.
According to a latest study there are approximately 10.3 lakh nurses enrolled with the Nursing Council. However, only four lakhs of these nurses are actively in service. A huge majority of them have left service due to retirement, marriage and immigration. In this context, there is a vast gap in demand and supply.
There is great demand for skilled nurses overseas. In fact, India has emerged as the major provider of nurses to foreign countries. The lure of big money and better living conditions overseas often attracts experienced nurses from India. A big reason for the scarcity of nurses in the domestic sector is their flight to foreign lands.
Specialization of Nursing Course
The nursing profession has evolved considerably over the last century, including the introduction of specializations for nurses, with specific knowledge and experience to practice in certain fields. There are now many possible areas that a nurse may choose to specialize in, and these continue to grow.
Future as a Nurse
There’s more than just a place for nurses in the future, there is a significant demand. A critical shortage is expected within the next five years, and the inception of COVID-19 has likely only shortened that timeline.
Nursing leaders must seek to leverage the momentum from the renewed faith in nurses to advocate for better safety standards in hospitals and nurse staffing that is done smarter. There is a significant opportunity for improved education to produce stronger nurses, fill in the gaps, and deliver better healthcare, especially as it pertains to new grad nurses getting ready to enter the workforce.

1. Saving a life
2. Always something new
